Gettin’ Stitched
July 23, 2008My poor girl! On Sunday she fell down and cut her leg pretty bad and we had to take her to an Urgent Care center in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Considering that she is only six, she was amazingly brave. Her two heros came to her rescue. First Grand Dad tended to the wound while we were at their house with so much love and tenderness yet firm calmness. What a blessing that he was the first one on the scene. Then Grammy, Daddy and I took her to the urgent care. Daddy carried her in and stayed with her for the initial exam and the shots while I was in the reception room with my mom filling out paperwork. Hearing her scream from the back room was tough on us both. Finally, I got to go back to see her. Unfortunately, I wasn’t thinking and I should have asked if my Mom could come back too. I left her sitting there wondering how my poor girl was doing! By the time I got back to my daughter, the wound was numb but she was still scared about what was to come.
Bless my Mom. She’d given my daughter a kitty Webkinz to have something to hold for the procedure. That helped a LOT.
Then our awesome nurse - a grandmother herself – found some stickers for Ashlee to have. The Hannah Montana sticker had to go on her shirt right then and there.
On our way out of the house, I’d grabbed a lunch bag and filled it with Jelly Beans. Not knowing how long we’d have to wait or what to expect, I grabbed a couple things and threw them in my purse for distraction. I used the beans to get Ashlee to close her eyes. Then I’d pop a bean in her mouth and have her guess the color. Unfortunately, she opened her eyes at the point that she saw the doctor take the tweezers toward the knee and she totally freaked out. Then the beans were useless to get her to close her eyes anymore!
Not having had any lunch and very little breakfast, I had a hard time in that room. It was SO hot and I don’t handle big wounds well. So I had to go sit down when I got light headed. Thankfully, my husband was a rock and held Ashlee’s hand and talked with her all the way through the actual stitches.
We were so lucky that we got to the center 15 minutes before they were supposed to close for the day. Despite being at the very end of their shift, our doctor and nurse were fantastic. So patient and gentle with our little girl.
After she was all stitched and bandaged, the doctor wanted to make sure nothing was broken so he asked her to bend her knee. She bent it so far back to show him how well she could bend it that I started to get woozy again. Then she got down and he asked her to take a few steps and jump. She was jumping around like a normal healthy six year old and the doctor couldn’t help but giggle at her enthusiasm. I guess she charmed him because the next day he called us to check in and see how she was feeling! What a blessing to have solid parents and professionals around when you need them.
Christina: Oh! Your poor baby! what an ordeal. I guess every kid has go go thru it at some point...she sounds like a little trooper, sounding so hard to be brave! Love that pic of the doctor in action.
